While Swaraj has been been recently praised by PM Modi for her work under her assigned portfolio, the same came under scanner for 'helping' Lalit Modi erupting into a fresh controvery. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj was at the centre of a row after admitting to having helped former IPL chief Lalit Modi procure documents to travel to Portugal last July on 'humanitarian grounds'. Where the BJP came out in support of Swaraj, Congress demanded her resignation. The senior minister faced flak for having helped Lalit Modi procure documents to travel to Portugal in 2014. Lalit Modi, who is wanted by the Enforcement Directorate for alleged financial impropriety in the money-spinning IPL, stays in London. (Read More)

Before the whole Lalit Modi-Sushma Swaraj controversy could die, Swaraj blew her lid off on Twitter. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj reacted angrily to a tweet suggesting she took favours to get her daughter a seat in a medical college through the northeast quota. When a Twitter user insinuated that she is no stranger to taking and giving favours! as her daughter studied through NorthEast quota in medical college, Sushma impulsively retorted that her daughter is a lawyer and not into medical profession. Pushing for declaring Bhagwad Gita as a national scripture, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said only a formal announcement remained in this regard, sparking a controversy with TMC and and Congress coming out with sharp responses. The original request was made by VHP President Ashok Singhal who wanted Prime Minister Narendra Modi to immediately declare the sacred text of Hindus as a national scripture. Swaraj seconded it stating that the respect of a 'national scripture' was already accorded to Gita when Prime Minister Modi gifted it to US President Barack Obama during his visit to the country in September 2014. Sushma Swaraj, the then leader of opposition sparked controversy when visuals of her dancing at Mahatma Gandhi's Samadhi while on a protest at Rajghat was aired on television channels. The Congress, demanded her resignation while on the other hand, Swaraj defended her act saying she was dancing to the tune of patriotic songs to boost the morale of the cadres which is in keeping with the traditions of the party.

BJP leader Sushma Swaraj's claim that PDP president Mehbooba Mufti had praised Narendra Modi's (then Gujrat CM) work ethics triggered a verbal duel between Mufti and Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Mehbooba Mufti denied reports of her praise of Modi at a recent meeting of the National Integration Council in Delhi and said her remarks were quoted out of context. She asked the Centre to release the transcript of her speech to clear the misgivings.
