A Month after a couple of embarrassing episodes involving the Nigdi police, top officials finally woke up and took action against the errant policemen.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone III) Dnyaneshwar Chavan suspended five constables for dereliction of duty while three other constables are awaiting punishment.
Minor rape case
An eight-year-old girl was raped in Nigdi on the night of September 6, allegedly by Suraj Bhagwan alias Savta Ranpise (45), a resident of Yamuna Nagar. An irate mob had beaten up Ranpise and handed him over to the Nigdi police.
Anticipating mob violence, Police Inspector Sharad Ugale had deputed two constables Baban Agale and Patel outside Ranpise's furniture shop. But the two policemen failed to control the mob, which burnt down the Ranpise's shop.
Doc's clinic attack
In another incident, an angry mob attacked the clinic of Dr Kumbhar, alleging he had administered a wrong injection to 24-year-old Amol Dilip Ghone, leading to his death. Inspector Ugale had then deputed police Constables V R Dolas, C H Wagh and Vijay Dahale at the doctor's clinic, but they reportedly just watched as the violent mob took the law in its hands.
"The five constables have been suspended for 90 days. During this period a thorough enquiry will be conducted and after the final report is submitted, departmental action will be taken against the errant constables," said Deputy Commissioner (Zone III) Chavan.

"The suspension of the constables is a temporary action which will send a strong message to others that negligence in duty will not be tolerated in any case. Citizens have certain expectations from the department and policemen deputed at various locations should respond properly to the unfolding situation."
