HEALING TOUCH: H D Kumaraswamy spent Sunday, Monday and part of Tuesday in Chikmagalur with Sandalwood actress Radhika. He returned to the city last evening and is set to join his father, former prime minister H D Deve Gowda, in his statewide agitation against farmland acquisition in a few days |
Ailments of a serious nature did not let former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy join his aged father in his protest against farmland acquisition yesterday, but at least he had the solace of being tended to by his film star sweetheart Radhika.
Kumaraswamy and Radhika spent time together in Chikmagalur, where the two were on a private visit since Valentine's Day on Sunday.
Though it was publicly stated that it would only be on February 24 that Kumaraswamy would be joining the statewide protest that has the NICE (Nandi Infrastructure Corridor Enterprises) high-speed road as its primary focus, efforts were on, in private, to have him there from the first day.
Deve Gowda had almost consented to Kumaraswamy's joining the protest, but his doctor son-in-law C N Manjunath struck the idea down, said sources close to the Gowda family.
"The doctor said the ailments were serious and Kumaraswamy needed complete bed rest," said a source. "Even he (Kumaraswamy) was not keen on stressing himself."
Even as his heart condition continues to be delicate, ascites has come up as a new complication for Kumaraswamy. The most common cause of ascites is cirrhosis of the liver, which in turn is generally an outcome of alcoholism.
A heart valve of Kumaraswamy's was replaced two years ago. While lack of discipline concerning diet has affected his blood sugar level, smoking has caused a serious lung infection.
MiD DAY had reported on Friday on how Kumraswamy's smoking and hard-drinking habits were taking a toll on his health, and that doctors had ordered him to keep off both.
Film star Radhika has been linked with Kumaraswamy for some years now. Last year he spent Valentine's Day with her, and she had organised a Nagamandala, a ritual to celebrate the snake god, specially for him at her farmhouse near Mangalore.
Not wanting to miss her company this year as well, he is understood to have insisted on spending Valentine's Day with her. He reached Chikmagalur on Sunday, when the pair celebrated the day meant for lovers. It was a strictly private occasion for the two.
The couple reportedly even performed a puja at Subramanya temple near Udupi.

Kumaraswamy returned to Bangalore yesterday evening, when his father, former prime minister H D Deve Gowda, was proceeding to Tumkur for the protest after kick-starting it at Hemmigepura, a village off Kanakapura Road.
"It was a private visit and nobody was allowed there. So we have no details," said a JD (S) office-bearer of the Chikmagalur episode.
When contacted, Deve Gowda said, "Allow him some rest, and he will enter the field to add all the vigour to our protest on February 21."
