PMC agrees to extend permission for demonstrations; IAC receives Rs 2.4 lakh in donations to keep stir going
India Against Corruption (IAC), the organisation which is coordinating the demonstrations in the city in support of Anna Hazare as he fasts in Delhi for a stronger Lokpal bill, is planning to keep doing the job for another eight days if the social activist continues with his protest.
The last eight days have seen donations for the cause reach Rs 2.4 lakh, of which Rs 1.75 lakh has been spent on miscellaneous items.
No dearth of support: Students of the society for the differently-abled person, education and research center, Wanawadi come out in support of Anna Hazare's Jan Lokpal Bill on J M Road
Sandeep Khardekar, president of the Creative Foundation and who has also joined the IAC, said that the IAC has now stopped collecting donations since all the required expenses have been met.
The money has been spent on putting up pandals, printing of information brochures, purchase of candles and hiring of electronic items like mikes and television.
"We are accountable and want to maintain audits of every penny spent in Pune during the agitation," he said. Khardekar said that the organisation only took requisite permissions from the PMC and the traffic police and the Deccan Gymkhana Police for the demonstrations.
Ramesh Shelar, who heads the Anti-Encroachment Cell of the PMC, agreed to extend the permission for the next eight days if it was required.
No charges "We have not charged them anything since the cause is noble. Secondly, the land IAC is using for the agitation has been owned by some private party," he said. Changing the venue for a day, IAC activists will be agitating at Harshal Hall on Karve Road today.
"We will fast for an entire day," said B B Somani, city coordinator, IAC. "At least 5,000 activists from various organisations are expected to join us."
