The 58-year-old victim Deshraj Thakar from Jammu lost his life while trying to cross railway tracks at Borivli station

This week after retrieving an injured man from the railway tracks at Borivli station, the Government Railway Police (GRP) safely kept Rs 46,000 found in the victim's bag and fervently tried to trace his relatives.

The man lost his life on the way to the hospital. But, when his relatives arrived in Mumbai they were given back all the man's money, paisa for paisa. Deshraj Thakar (58) was found lying injured on the railway track of platform 3 at Borivli station on Monday at 7.28 am by two constables of the Borivli GRP.

Thakar, who was from Jammu, was in Mumbai for official work. "On Monday at around 7.28 am our staff found him and rushed him to the Bhagwati Hospital where he was declared dead," said a source from Borivli GRP.

Thakar had seriously injured his head, hands and left leg. In the process of trying to ascertain his identity, the staff found a diary, a voting card and money amounting to Rs 46,532 in his bag.

Material remains: The GRP found the deceased's voter identity card , a diary and Rs 46,000 in cash in his bag.

"The Rs 46,532 was kept in a separate plastic bag and he also had Rs 832 in his pockets. We tracked down the number of his son Kuldip Singh Thakar and contacted him," added the source.

Both Thakar's sons arrived in Mumbai on Thursday and performed their father's last rites. They then left the city with his belongings.

Each year, thousands of passengers die on Mumbai's railway tracks despite the Railway Protection Force's regular drives to restrict passengers from crossing tracks. On an average, ten passengers are killed on the tracks of Mumbai's railway stations each day.

Shivajirao Bagal, senior inspector (GRP), Borivli, said, "We contacted the family through the phone numbers in Thakar's diary. We have returned all the money we got from the deceased's bag." u00a0
