Fed up of the hollow promises made by the Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) about installing CCTV cameras on the crowded M G Road, Fashion Street and near Shivaji Market, a Ganesh mandal in Camp donated four CCTV cameras to the PCB for installing at Central Street considering for a safer visarjan today.

Shri Datta Samaj Tarun Mandal purchased four cameras at a cost of Rs 4,500 each, from the donations they received, of which three have already been installed at Central Street.

"The state government and the PCB have been promising to install the CCTV cameras in Camp for the last six months, citing blasts that occurred on JM Road last year. But the PCB has failed to fulfill its promises. Hence, without further delay, our mandal purchased the cams and installed them at Central Street on Monday for a safer visarjan," mandal president Praveen Jadhav said.

Meanwhile, as many as 56 CCTV cameras were installed in pay and park areas on MG Road by parking lot operators as per directives issued by officials of the Lashkar police station citing security reasons.

"The proposal of installing 18 CCTV cameras that will cover large areas is yet to be sanctioned by the Southern Command, hence the pay and park operators installed 56 CCTV cameras on MG Road," PVB Electrical Engineer Vijay Chavan said. He is in-charge of the installation.

When contacted, PCB Vice-President Aarti Mahajan seemed clueless about the installation of three new CCTV cams on Central Street. She said the Southern Command might approve the demand of installing cameras on all the three routes, when asked about the installation of cameras on MG Road.
