Hanumant Bhagwan Shinde (35), a close aide of notorious gangster Mahakali, was arrested on Saturday by the Social Security Cell of the Crime Branch. Shinde had been absconding since December, when he had opened fire on the Dehu Road police. Shinde has over 30 cases lodged against him. He had also attacked 1993 bomb blast accused Javed Patni in 2004 in Yerawada jail.
Shinde was remanded in police custody for four days by the Shivajinagar court. At the time of his arrest, two revolvers were seized from him. A case was registered against Shinde under the Arms Act as well. "Shinde was absconding since December, when he and his gang opened fire on Dehu Road police station officials. He escaped from jail in 2009 and went on to commit several offences," said Additional Commissioner of Police Anant Shinde. "His two accomplices escaped Saturday's trap."
PI Bhanupratap Barge said the Mahakaliu00a0 gang operated in the rural areas under the Dehu Road police stationu00a0 jurisdiction and was involved in extortion, robbery and rioting. "Shinde had also attacked a duty officer in 2005 in Yerawada. Shinde had twice escaped from police custody, first from the Pimpri court in 2001 and then from Sassoon hospital in 2007," Barge said.
