She, along with four other students, were caught cheating during an internal assessment forensic exam that was held last December
A day after Durgesh Shekhawat committed suicide, it was revealed that she was suspended by college authorities on Monday for cheating during an internal assessment forensic exam last December. S Kumar, principal and dean of the college M S Ramaiah Medical College, said, "Yes, she was caught indulging in plagiarism last year. But it was only last week that the board decided to suspend her, along with four other students. However, we were shocked to know that she committed suicide, as we did not anticipate this reaction from her."
Deceased: Durgesh Shekhawat, a second year MBBS student, was
found hanging from the ceiling fan at her hostel on Tuesday
However, Hanuman Singh Shekhawat, Durgesh's father who arrived in the city from Indore yesterday morning, claims that his daughter showed no signs of depression. "She told us about the incident in December, but she was not upset about it. We used to speak to her almost daily. Also, we saw her in February and she showed no signs of despair."
Shekhawat also lambasted the college administration for not informing him about his daughters' death. He said, "We received a call from the police stating that she had died. Instead, the management should have informed us."
Negating Shekhawat's allegations, Kumar said, "It's surprising that the Shekhawat family is accusing us of not informing them about their daughter's death. We called them right after the police spoke to the family. Also, one cannot expect me to carry contact numbers of about 1,000 students all the time."
