A police official said that Nadar had known the accused since 1999. The fraud was detected after she found that the gems used for weaving the necklace were not genuine.
"The jewellery was presented in a very attractive manner to the prospective buyers. On such representations Kiran started purchasing jewellery from him in the belief that she was purchasing precious stones embedded in antique jewellery which belonged to erstwhile royal families," said the senior police official.
The accused used to pay a visit to the victim's house to sell her jewellery. On each occasion, he assured her that the valuables were embedded with original stones and gems of the best quality.
The official said that the victim was shocked when she came to know that the jewellery she bought was actually fake. "The victim got her necklace verified at a government approved institute and found out about the fraud. She approached the police and got an FIR registered.
