Think saatvik, think very vegetarian, and finally, the all new 64/6 lets you think outside your home kitchen

Think saatvik, think very vegetarian, and finally, the all new 64/6 lets you think outside your home kitchen

Gone are the days of vaishnav bhojanalays and Udipi restaurants, and if there are any left, their presence is sparse, and prices, exorbitant. Most restaurants feel variety is the spice of life, and want to treat patrons to their pound of flesh. But of course, every once a while comes an exception. Country Inn & Suites claims to be the country's only all-veg five-star hotel, and we suspect that might just be true. Their restaurant, named 64/6 after the plot number, offers a refreshing, healthy bistro experience. "The classes are moving towards vegetarian food, particularly while going out for a family dinner. Some people do tend to feel awkward after knowing we don't serve non-vegetarian food, but I have observed more often, that they are the ones turning up again," says Sumit Sinha, director, Food & Beverages. Just to tell you how cautious they are, there's no bone china crockery used, either.

Food

With an option of buffet and a la carte menus, they serve continental, Italian, Oriental and a variety of Indian cuisines. We tried the buffet. The salad section was sumptuous, with a chaat counter and raitas. The arbi tikkas and hara kebabs were just as inviting. For the main course, we sampled achari kathal, paneer mircha and dal makhani, and believe it or not, they take 72 hours to prepare this dal! Also, they make sure that preparations which otherwise use egg-based ingredients like mayonnaise are cooked without these. For instance, the thin crust pizza Margarita prepared without egg is a revelation. In Continental options, those worth a try include baked vegetable Hawaiian and rosemary potatoes. And, you simply cannot miss the live dosa counter. We rounded it off with the teppanyaki ice cream counter, which allows for an assortment of fruits, nuts and chocolates of your choice folded in your favourite flavour of ice cream right in front of you on a freezing steel plate. And again, it's all pure veg, guaranteed.

Drinks

As they emphasise of family dining, alcohol is a big no-no. But mocktails like grainy Smith mojito or soups like tomato dhania shorba and cream of mushroom make up quite well.

Ambience

Alcove at the basement, the 120-seater eatery is spacious, warm and welcoming. Bold splashes of red on chairs and walls and the sheer beige marble are set against a backdrop of a melange of wooden textures, giving it the right mix of spirits. The smiling hosts only make the experience better. A great place to go with your tantrum-throwing, pocket conscious old relatives.
