chic hairdresser, who runs the popular kitsch salon Mad-o-Wot. Actor Naseeruddin Shah has been creating a stir sporting dreadlocks; a look that Sapna styled for the Anup Kurien directed-Hunt.
It is a Malayalam-English thriller set on a hash plantation. Made on a budget of Rs 50 lakhs, Naseer plays a nameless character in the film. "Earlier, I gave Naseer dark hair for his role in Ishqiya.
He was cool with our suggestion, which is rare in Bollywood. Plus, he carried it off really well," she recollects. "As hairdressers, we think of crazy ideas, constantly; the personalities must pull it off. In Naseer's case it worked wonders. Everyone has been talking about it..."
Speaking about Naseer's dreadlocks, she's all praise for the actor's commitment, "It was Naseer's idea. He pitched in with his money. We used silver-grey hair; it doesn't seem unreal, more like he was born with it." It had to look authentic, as if he was sporting real dreadlocks; Bob Marleysque influences were used.
She calls it her best work for films because it's according to the part, the character and the actor carrying it off, effortlessly. A day went in styling the dreadlocks, the process of applying it took seven hours. "Dreads are heavy; I've done it hazaar times, so I warned him about it. You need 2-3 days to get comfortable with it. But he had no such hassles."
Talking about the buzz it's created, Sapna's ecstatic, "Ratna (his wife) was like, 'I don't know what you've done but everyone's fallen in love with his look'. Now, he'll relate to the young lot. Recently, when Naseer walked into my salon for a shampoo, these young chicks found him hot! It's have helped him cross over to a new audience.

That's the beauty of changing your look. This happened with John's (Abraham) short hair," she adds. Quiz Sapna about the Bollywood actor she'd like to see with dreadlocks, "KK Menon. He doesn't represent one but many characters. If he works hard on his role selection, he could become India's Johnny Depp."
