It is an inspiring tale of how two righteous cops ensured that a retired serviceman did not lose all his live's savings. However, the catch is that still there is a "Don't try this at home" tag attached.
It was around 9 o'clock on Saturday and Constables Mohammad Asif Khan and Sundar Lal were busy with their routine checking at the 'always bustling with activity' New Delhi Railway Station. While walking on platform number 12 and 13, watching hundreds of passengers moving in and out with luggage, the two cops spotted two bags lying unclaimed.

Somebody might have forgotten his luggage behind or so they thought. They enquired the passengers around but failed to locate the owner. They waited patiently but when nobody turned up to claim the bags, Khan and Lal ran them through a metal detector and deposited the luggage at the cloak room.
On Sunday, they opened the bags to find a clue to the identity of the owner and were in for the surprise of their lives. While one bag had an Army uniform and other clothes, the second one had some papers and Rs 2,80,000 in cash.
The money was in denomination of 1000 and 100 rupee notes.
The amount was worth more than several months of their salaries and the cops knew they had hit a jackpot.u00a0
What went through their mind, when MiD DAY asked them, the two cops politely refused to comment saying: "We are not allowed to speak to the media."
Contrary to the public perception about the honesty of the policemen, Khan and Lal found that the bags belonged to E Neli Mao of Assam Regiment. They went to the Military Control Office (MCO) at the station and handed the bags over.
"It is a great display of honesty by the officers. Since we were not able to directly communicate with the officer we have asked the Military Control Office to inform Mao about his lost luggage," said additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Bhairav Singh Gurjar.
Mao had retired recently and was returning home with all his savings, it was learnt.u00a0
The Delhi Police has announced it will reward Khan and Lal "suitably". Sources confirmed that the army officer has been communicated about his lost luggage but he is yet to collect it from the MCO.
