At least four persons died and 29 others fell ill, three of them seriously, after allegedly consuming spurious liquor at Badapokharia village in Khurda district, about 45 km south of here, official sources said.
The incident took place at Badapokharia village Monday night where about 40 people had consumed alleged illicit liquor from an authorised liquor shop. The police have so far arrested two persons engaged in sale of liquor, sources said.
While three persons died at the district headquarters hospital at Khurda town, another person died at a private hospital here, Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO), Khurda SS Kar said adding that cause of deaths would only be known after postmortem reports were available.
Three persons were shifted to SCB Medical College Hospital in Cuttack as their condition worsened at Khurda hospital, the CDMO said.

The District Collector NC Jena and Superintendent of Police RC Mohanty and other senior officials have rushed to the village. The District Collector said, "we can say something only after getting postmortem report."
