Power supply affected for more than eight hours

Passengers at Delhi airport had a harrowing time, as power supply remained affected for more than eight hours on Wednesday evening. The DIAL authorities shut down the air-conditioning system of the airport and backup for vital operations was provided through generator sets. The supply could be restored only late in the night at 11:00 pm.



"Power supply to both terminal 3 and domestic terminal as been restored at 11 pm," a Delhi airport official told MiD DAY.

Operations at the airport was affected as one of the main cables of the utility company, BSES was damaged. The Delhi airport handles maximum traffic in the evening hours. The passengers as well as airline staff complained of suffocation as the power cut continued till late in the night.

However, airport officials said, emergency services like ticketing, food and beverages service and other essential services were not affected. "The power occurred from around 3:45 pm after one of the main cables was damaged due to the digging work by the Public Works Department of Delhi Government near National Highway-8," airport officials said.

"DIAL has ensured that no essential services are affected at the airport except air-conditioning. DIAL's standby diesel generator sets will ensured that the airport operations are not adversely affected," DIAL said in a statement.

The Delhi airport officials said BSES power failure also occurred for a very brief period for three minutes this morning between 11: 07 am and 11:10 am.
