Ask the working junta on the Parel-Mahalakshmi stretch of Tulsi Pipe Road about his or her lunch woes and they'll have tons to share. Restaurants in the area tell you, matter-of-factly, that a delivery can take up to 90 minutes during lunchtime.

Expecting to find a table at a decent eatery nearby will make you the rightful recipient of the title King of Wishful Thinking.

Mediterranean Spicy Panini.

Naturally, we were only glad to hear of a new eatery, Mumbai Deli, which claims to care about the food quality, with healthy soups, salads, sandwiches and wraps on the menu.

The place targets the office-goer on the lookout for a change from the canteen fare during breakfast and lunchtime.

The timings make it obvious it's open between 8 am and 7 pm, serving breakfast, brunch and lunch. Finding the place isn't difficult; after all it's located next to a popular restaurant offering coastal cuisine.

Mumbai Deli is more of a takeaway/delivery place and the tiny seating area makes it pretty clear.

The deli resembles an office canteen, only the staff here plays Coldplay, which is regularly interrupted by a very irritating ring tone from their landline phone.

We got there during peak lunch hours and every table was occupied. Obviously, Mumbai Deli has managed to get noticed in the three weeks since it opened its doors. But a steady stream of customers as well as orders on the phone didn't help.

Our order Chicken and Barley Soup (Rs 65), All American Club Sandwich (Rs 110) and Mediterranean Spicy Panini (Rs 95) took nearly an hour to get onto the table. The food was great but the long wait ruined our appetite.

The Watermelon Lime Cooler (Rs 40) was aerated (isn't this a a health food place!) and super sweet. The Cinnabon Roll (Rs 50), which did not take long to arrive on our table, was the best part of our order.

With a dollop of Vanilla ice cream and a hot cappuccino, the roll would make a perfect evening snack on a rainy evening.

The trick with Mumbai Deli is to place an early order for lunch or better still, drop by for a brunch. That's because they run out of the interesting salads and sandwiches by lunchtime.

Owner Kshitij Morarka informs us that the focus is on fresh ingredients not huge quantities. Cutting down on overheads for a new place makes business sense but not at the cost of leaving patrons few options to order from.
