When the police arrived on the scene, they found Sharma dead over the car's steering wheel, with several injuries. Damage to the windshield, right front door and window was complete. It was a simple matter of an accident. Or so they thought.
The police sent the body for post-mortem; the results were quite astonishing.
The report revealed on May 7, a day after the incident that Sharma was shot in the neck and might have been dead even beforeu00a0 his Wagon R rammed into the pole.
"The doctors found a bullet lodged in Sharma's neck. The bullet was fired from behind and pierced through the lower part of the skull," a senior police official said.
Grieving family of Sharma, comprising his wife and two children Vishnu, 7, and Jaya, 9, were shocked at the discovery.
"Sharma had returned from Dubai the same day, he was killed. He was business partner of my husband and we know him for the last five years. He had no enmity with anybody. It's really shocking," said Bindu, wife of Sharma's business partner Gulab Singh.
Even the police admitted that some professional killer might be involved in the case.
"We are working on all angles to the case. It could have been a possible robbery attempt but then he was not carrying any cash at that time. We are talking to the family members of the victim to find out more details," said Deputy Commisisoner of Police (West) Sharad Aggarwal.
Police are also probing his links in Dubai. Sharma's partner Gulab Singh Chauhan has also been questioned. "Sharma was a young successful businessman and there are possibilities of business rivalry. The road on which Sharma was shot had no space for another car to have run parallel to Sharma's car so the assassin may have been on a bike," Aggarwal added.
Sharma's body has been taken to his paternal village in Gurgaon for cremation. The bullet has been sent for ballistic examination.
