The civic ward committee has cleared the proposal of naming achowk in Powai after MiD DAY's late senior journalist J Dey, and it will now be put before the BMC's Works Committee (suburbs) for approval. The meeting has been scheduled for tomorrow, and is likely to get the all clear.
"It would be a fitting tribute to name a chowk after a great journalist. It would also be an inspiration for the next generation, as they will always remember him [J Dey]," said Krishna Parkar, chairman of the Works Committee. Parkar also added that the proposal will be taken as urgent business and will be cleared immediately.
The chowk to be named after MiD DAY's investigations editor (crime) is located near the Hiranandani Gardens, Central Avenue Road, which is opposite D-Mart departmental stores. The chowk will be named as Senior Journalist Dey Chowk.
Chandan Sharma, local corporator from NCP, had earlier demanded that a chowk be named after J Dey. After getting the approval from the Works Committee, the proposal will be tabled before the General Body meeting for the final nod. "There is no question of opposing the proposal. He was a great journalist. So we will clear it as soon as possible and it will be a top priority,"said Mayor Sunil Prabhu, who chairs the general body meeting.
Recently, a news museum in Washington dedicated a wall to journalists who lost their lives while covering news, war, disaster or crimes. On the wall is a picture of Dey. He was killed on June 11, 2011 outside Spectra Building near D-Mart in Powai. u00a0u00a0
