In its efforts to speed up the redevelopment work of cessed Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) buildings, the Mumbai Repair and Reconstruction Board (MRRB) has started organising janta darbars near dilapidated buildings. This initiative by MHADA will help residents get faster replies to their queries concerning the redevelopment activity.
Speaking to MiD DAY, chairman of MRRB Prasad Lad said, "Our experience tells us that people staying in various cessed buildings in Mumbai have issues related to the redevelopment plan or the condition of the building. We've started setting up janta darbars so that these people can ask us their questions directly."

This initiative will help people, who often have to run from pillar to post trying to resolve their issues. "We can also call this concept as government at your doorstep because this will be for the first time that all senior officials right from chief officer to junior engineers will be present in front of the residents of these cessed buildings and together we intend to solve people's problems," Lad added.
MRRB plans to organise 12 janta darbars across Mumbai in two months. A similar initiative was undertaken at 11th lane in the Girgaum-Khetwadi area. At present, there are 16,000 such buildings in the city with another 3,000-odd structures having gone in for redevelopment.
The repair and reconstruction board issues NOCs for redevelopment of buildings and the BMC grants permission for the floor plan.
What are cessed buildings?
Buildings that require structural repairs, which is carried out by MHADA for a certain fee are termed as cessed. There are about 19,644 such buildings between Colaba and Mahim, all constructed between 1940 and 1969.u00a0
