Top Dima Halam Daogah militant Jewel Gorlossa, whose faction was held responsible for the recent violence in Assam's North Cachar Hills district, has been arrested from Bangalore by the state police. Gorlosa and two of his aides, Partha Warisa and Samir Pathak, were arrested by an Assam police team led by DIG G P Singh from a hotel in Bangalore yesterday, official sources said here.
The police team had been camping in Bangalore to nab Garlosa with the help of Karnataka police after a tip off, the sources said. The team would move court for a transit remand to bring Garlosa here tomorrow, the sources said. The DHD has been demanding a separate state of Dimaraji comprising Dimasa dominated areas in NC Hills, Karbi Anglong, Cachar, parts of Nagaon district in Assam, besides Dimapur and Dhansiripar in Nagaland.
Though the DHD led by Dilip Nunisa had entered into a ceasefire agreement with the Centre on January 1, 2003, Jewel Gorlosa was opposed to it and broke away to form the DHD (Jewel). The DHD(J), alleged to have links with the NSCN (IM), has been involved in extortion and kidnapping for ransom after targeting the Railways, private companies and government officials.
Earlier on May 30, North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council chief executive member Mohet Hojai and its Social Welfare Department Joint Director R H Khan were arrested in Haflong for allegedly financing DHD (J). Jewel in his mid 40s was the founding commander-in-chief of the erstwhile Dimasa National Security Force set up in 1993-94. All the members of the underground outfit had surrendered in 1995, but Jewel did not and instead formed the DHD.
