Carried stolen wireless set like the ones used by Delhi police
In a sensational revelation on Tuesday, the Delhi police claimed to have solved the murders of both Jigisha Ghosh, the IT professional killed last week, and TV journalist Saumya Vishwanathan, who was shot dead in September last year. Cops alleged that the gang of fouru00a0Ravi Kapoor, Amit Kumar Shukla, Baljeet Malik and Ajay Kumaru00a0arrested first for Ghosh's murder, had killed Viswanathan too.
"Acting on a tip off, the four men were nabbed near Vasant Vihar when then they were on their way to commit a robbery. The police have recovered the weapon with which they had killed Ghosh," said Delhi Police Commissioner YS Dadwal.
He said that the police have recovered the Santro car in which the gang had kidnapped Ghosh, a loaded country-made pistol with cartridges, a red light beacon, fake press cards, wireless sets, master keys for vehicles, plastic plates with stars generally displayed on police cars and even a police uniform.
It was the uniform, the wireless walkie-talkie and the star-studded plate that made the police suspect that cops were involved in the kidnap-cum-murder of Ghosh.
When a team of police officials visited the Sarojini Nagar market in south Delhi to check the transactions done by the accused with Ghosh's debit cards which had been stolen, they were in for a rude shock when the shopkeeper said that one of the shoppers was a police official who had bought a watch. "The shopkeeper said that the customer was carrying a handset (walkie-talkie) which is normally used by the police. Initially, we believed that one of our own men was involved but after analysing the security camera footage we discarded that theory," said a police official, wishing anonymity.
He also said that the main accused Ravi Kapoor, had stolen the walkie-talkie from a shop he used to work at and carried it to disguise himself as a policeman. "When we arrested the gang, we recovered two stolen walkie-talkie sets," the officer added.
The police also claimed that the men had confessed to have being drunk while killing the two girls. "We were heavily drunk when we shot at Soumya. Even while kidnapping and murdering Jigisha we were drunk," the accused allegedly said during their interrogation.
