Mexican cuisine takes another shot at jaded palates in the city. Will Sancho's from Delhi manage to go where no molletes has gone?

Walking into Sancho's made us feel a little like we imagine Jim Carrey's character in The Mask must have felt sliding down the steps of the swish Coco Bongo. Not that Sancho's has any steps to glide down, given that it is situated on the ground floor of the same building that houses The Tasty Tangles, and is also run by the same guys. Pity we left our sombreros behind!

As soon as we negotiated our way to a table, a cheerful sort smiled and flung a menu our way, which is around the time we decided to surrender our film fantasy since squinting at the Mexican font on our brochure-style menu did little for our self-esteem. That's when our cheerful server offered help in the form of liquid courage. And so, the Strawberry Margarita (Rs 375) it was: pink, chilled, and perky. Superb! The Molletes Rs 145 or "Mexican bruschetta" (as our server pointed out) were four cheese toasts heaped with chopped tomatoes and onions. We like!

If there's one recommendation we will make, it's the Chicken Baked Potato (Rs 225). Steep price, if you're into counting potatoes (just two, if you must know), but they didn't skimp on the stuffing: juicy chicken and lots of cheese with ribbons of sour cream. The guys at Sancho's do know how to bake a potato.

It might be a good idea to stick to server recommendations, unless of course you know an enchilada from a fajita. The Spicy Chicken Tacos (Rs 345) is served with their staple accompaniments -- refried beans and rice, and a variety of dips, including sour cream. The refried beans tasted bland and pasty. The rice? We'll pass, thanks.

For dessert, we opted for the Coconut Flan (Rs 150), which arrived on a plate flecked with powdered sugar, and tasted just as pretty.

If you're stopping by for an evening of serious dining, try to get a table towards the front of the restaurant, because further back the tables are much too low to enjoy a comfortable dinner. We liked the laid-back vibe of this place, and while the Main Courses aren't much to write home about, this is the place to stop by for a relaxed evening when you're in the mood to sip on a margarita.

Sancho's didn't know we were there. The Guide reviews and pays anonymously for meals.u00a0
