Rangappa who was assigned to ferry VVIPs visiting the city, claimed to have driven 1,800 km over 20 days in December 2010.

Suspicions were further raised when the administrative section received the fuel bill for December from Rangappa for 242 litres, which he had charged to the official petro-card issued to him.

On crosschecking using the GPS system installed in the vehicle, it was found that Rangappa has used the vehicle to cover only 800 km.

Rangappa was summoned for clarification and shown the records, after which he confessed that he actually used to fill the fuel tank of the vehicle using the petro-card and then sell off the surplus to private parties.

A senior officer, in-charge of monitoring the GPS system, said that despite constant monitoring, these incidents often occur.

ACP (administration) U Nisar Ahmed said that Rangappa has been suspended and a departmental enquiry has been initiated.
