Room To Read, started by John Wood, has opened over 3,000 libaries across the country. The organisation hopes to add 850 libraries and 700 scholarships. In 2009, 96 per cent of the girl scholars in Room To Read's Girls' Education programme advanced to the next class.
Wood left a lucrative job at Microsoft Asia to form the organisation in 2000 after a trip to Nepal changed his life. Seeing how few books were available to children, he took it upon himself to build libraries and nurture education across Asia for underprivileged children. Today's auction hopes to raise money for that very purpose.
The NGO has partnered with the IPL. Apart from donating items to the auction on Sunday at the Westin Hotel, Goregaon, the IPL will promote their cause during games and in social media.
