BBMP begins its drive to demolish 40,000 illegal apartments in the city from today

If you're looking for a new 'low-cost' flat, beware.u00a0 For,u00a0 many of such flats available in the market are illegal.

The BBMP has identifiedu00a0 such illegal structures and will start its large-scale demolition drive from today.

All the apartments that have been built violating the bylaw, will be razed and stringent action taken against the offenders.u00a0u00a0

"We want to check the rampant illegal constructions in the city. People are simply falling prey to such menace," said Srinivas S, a contractor in BBMP.

BBMP has identified about 40,000 small and big illegal apartments in different zones of the city. The demolition work will be carried out in phases.

An apartment in Mahadevpura will be the first one to be razed and thousands of such apartments will be demolished in the days ahead, said a senior official in BBMP.

Mahadevpura zone is said to have the highest number of illegal structures, while Rajarajeshwarinagar has the least of such buildings.

Illegal constructions include structures without approval from sanctioning authorities and construction in violation of approved plans.u00a0

Most of the apartments offered at a cost much lower than the market price are usually constructed in violation of the law, according to the officials.u00a0

"Builders are in a hurry to sell the flats at low prices. People get attracted to the low prices and buy such flats without checking the documents properly. Hence, we have taken up various initiatives to create awareness among them," said Khandre, public relations officer, BBMP.

Poster campaign

The BBMP, as part of their awareness drive, has launched a poster campaign to urge people not to buy flats without enquiring the status of the structures and obtaining vital information of property.u00a0u00a0
