After opening the Eastern Freeway, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has speed up the work on the second tunnel to make it functional for motorists at the earliest.

The lining and excavation work of the 580-meter long second tunnel at Anik section on the freeway is approaching finishing line by this month end and should be completed by December.

According to Additional Metropolitan Commissioner Ashwini Bhide, "Once the lining and excavation work is completed the 4-lane tunnel will be provided with a drainage system, road surfacing, electrification and ventilation and be ready in December for a speedier commute on the Eastern Freeway."

Adding further Bhide said, "The work on the 2.81-km long Panjarpol-Ghatkopar Link Road is also simultaneously carried out in all zest and urgency to be completed by December."

The tunnel and the Panjarpol-Ghatkopar Link Road are crucial parts of the Eastern Freeway to afford it a totality. The entire 16.4-km long Freeway will then provide one more connectivity, besides the Eastern Express Highway, to the motorists travelling towards eastern suburbs, Thane, Nashik and further ahead.

The recently opened 13.59-km long Eastern Freeway has already proved to be a boon for motorists travelling from or towards South Mumbai. The left hand side tunnel at Anik has already been opened for traffic.
