Maharashtra government has moved the Supreme Court challenging the Bombay High Court's order asking persons belonging to various reserved categories across the state to get their caste claims revalidated, as certificates issued to them were null and void in the absence of vigilance reports.

A senior officer from the state's Social Justice Department claimed that 32,000 people have been asked to re-validate their caste certificate.u00a0

"Around 4,000-5,000 persons elected in the recent local bodies polls have been asked to re-validate their caste certificate within three months," Dinesh Waghmare, Secretary, Social Justice and Special Assistance department told reporters here.

He, however, said that there was no need to send each and every case to the Vigilance Cell. If their caste certificates are found to be invalid, they would lose their seats, he said.

A person has to do his caste validation if he is seeking admission to professional courses, applying for a government job or wants to contest elections, he said.
