Police, on Thursday, visited the Facebook office in Mumbai after the social network did not share information about profile of a Mangaluru man, who had allegedly posted derogatory content about Hindu goddesses.
According to a report in The Times of India, while the Mangaluru cops have registered a case against the accused, who is said to be absconding, they have even booked Facebook over non-cooperation. Police sources told TOI that the cops got a search warrant from a Mangaluru court, and then conducted the operation at Facebook's office in Bandra-Kurla Complex.
The report went on to add that the FB profile is in the name of one Jabbar BC Road alias Kudroli. "Jabbar had posted demeaning content pertaining to the goddesses on Facebook. It was widely circulated on social media and WhatsApp, and sparked communal tension in Mangaluru," an investigating officer told TOI.
The report further said that some months back, police had registered a case under IPC's Section 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion) and 295A (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting religious beliefs). But, investigation were hit as Facebook did not respond to requests from police.
"Despite repeated requests, including letters from senior police officials, the company refrained from providing the information. We registered a case against Facebook under Section 176 of the IPC (omission to give information to public servant by person legally bound to give it) and obtained a search warrant," the officer further told TOI.
