Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Thursday approved the appointment of Manish Tewari as the spokesperson of the All India Congress Committee
New Delhi: Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Thursday approved the appointment of Manish Tewari as the spokesperson of the All India Congress Committee.
Tewari has served as the Union Minister of State (Independent charge), Minister of Information and Broadcasting under the UPA regime.
Manish Tewari
He is a lawyer by qualification and has practised in the Supreme Court of India as well as the Delhi High Court.
He was earlier appointed a party spokesperson in 2008. Before his new appointment, Tewari was a media panelist of the party.
"Congress President Sonia Gandhi has approved the appointment of Manish Tewari as Spokesperson of All India Congress Committee," S V Ramani, Secretary of the AICC's Communication Department, said.
Tewari was acting chairperson of the Media department of the party during the last Lok Sabha elections.
With the appointment of Tewari, AICC will have a total of 28 spokespersons, besides 9 senior spokespersons.
Manish Tewari had landed himself into trouble recently by claiming that a 2012 media report on troop movement towards Delhi when Gen V K Singh was the Army chief was "unfortunate but true". The Congress had then been forced to snub the party leader.
Congress spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi had at the time said Tewari is "neither the authorised spokesperson nor was he a part of the Cabinet Committee on Security. It was not right for him to comment on such issues".
