The transfer of Superintendent of Pune Rural Police Sandeep Karnik to Mumbai was announced yesterday. The officer, caught in a controversy since the police firing on farmers agitating in Maval on August 9, had sought a transfer days after Home Minister R R Patil ordered an inquiry by a retired judge into the incident.

Aurangabad SP S S Solunke will take charge as Pune SP now. Additional Secretary (Home) confirmed that SP Karnik had been transferred to Mumbai. "The Commissioner of Mumbai will take a decision on which post is to be given to Karnik considering the vacant posts for deputy commissioner in Mumbai," he said. "The decision was taken as Karnik had sought transfer."
