A huge crowd had gathered outside the branch. In stark contrast, the bank wore a deserted look (pictured above), as 22 out of 25 employees had gone for election duty. "This is happening for the first time in my life," said Anant Raman, a retired SBI accountant, who had come there as a customer, "This branch was never closed for this reason in the past." Tarachand Valhe, chief manager at the branch, said he had to do duties of a peon, as even the latter was on election duty. "There is a daily loss of transaction of Rs 50 lakh in all 30 branches in the city. Transaction worth Rs 45 crore have been held up in these three days,"
he said.

Bank: Canara Bank
Branch:
Deccan Gymkhana
(Total 200 employees deployed)

Prakash Chavan, accounts officer at Canara Bank, said the system had broken down in all 28 branches in Pune. "Over 400 clerical staff have been taken away for election duty, which is totally irrational. Even core transactions like clearance have come to a standstill," he said.

Bank: Central Bank of India
Branch: Cantonment Branch
(Total 400 employees deployed)

Tukaram Gaikwad, manager at Central Bank of India said it was a bad timing for this deployment. "Tomorrow is a holiday. The weekend goes for Diwali. Work load is at its highest at this time. We can't handle the 4000-odd customers we have in absence of senior staff."
