The mishap occurred this morning when the victim Kadam Malick, a 7th standard student of Brajendra High School, was run over by a truck. The boy was returning home at Sinduria village after attending classes.
He died on the spot, superintendent of police, Nayagarh, Bhagyadhar Behera said. As the news of death spread, hundreds of villagers took to the street and set the truck on fire before gratecrashing into the Nayagarh Sadar police station where they damaged furniture and other materials.
Then they turned their ire on the fire tender which had rushed to spot to douse the fire on the truck. They also attacked a few other vehicle on the busy national highway No. 257 which linked Bhubaneswar with Phulbani and Koraput districts.
As the incident appeared to be snowballing into a big controversy as the victim belonged to minority community, panic-stricken traders downed their shutters in the town as a preventive measure and the business hub in the area wore a deserted look.
However, no one was injured in the incident and the situation is under control, Behera said. The people had staged a road blockade on the National Highway No. 257 demanding arrest of the culprit and adequate compensation to the next of kin of the victim.
