Celebrating Kannada Rajyotsava this year proved costly for the Karnataka Samrakshana Sangha, as the president of the association has been booked for extortion.

Amoeba, a well-known bowling alley, on Church Street filed a complaint with the Cubbon Park police stating the state president of the association had threatened the staff of the company running the centre with dire consequences unless a monetary contribution was made towards Kannada Rajyotsava celebrations.

Rs 50,000 demand
In his complaint, Dharmendra, a senior staff member at Amoeba, said that Kannada Somu along with five other people had demanded Rs 50,000 for the November 1 Rajyotsava celebrations. Somu also allegedly issued a letter with his organisation's logo when he came to demand the funds.

"The Amoeba management that makes decisions on contributions was out of station at the time and I expressed my inability to arrange such a big amount," Dharmendra said in his complaint. "Somu warned me of dire consequences if the amount was not paid."

Cubbon Park Police Inspector Jagadish said they had taken down the complaint against Somu. "We have received many such complaints against him and we are investigating," he said.

Stating he did not even know anyone in Ameoba, Somu refused to comment on the issue, except for saying: "It is false allegation, as I did not threaten anyone and demand money."
