A mother and son lost their lives in a road mishap on the Western Express Highway (WEH) between Kandivli and Borivli on Sunday. Around 4.30 pm, Hetal Vora (35) and Manav Vora (6) were on their way from Daulat Nagar to Saidham temple in Malad to attend a religious ceremony.
They were traveling on a motorbike driven by Vaibhav Vora (36), when suddenly the car in front of them applied the brakes, making Vaibhav take a left to avoid a collision. "However, a dumper coming from behind hit their bike, and the two-wheeler crashed. As a result, Manav, who was sitting on the fuel tank, fell on the road and was run over by the dumper.
Hetal and Vaibhav also fell hard. The family was rushed to Bhagwati hospital where the mother and child were declared dead. Vaibhav suffered from a fractured leg," said Piyush Vora, Vaibhav's brother. "If she was alive we would have celebrated our thirteenth wedding anniversary in five days," said a shattered Vaibhav, who runs an optical shop in Daulat Nagar.
"This is the first time that an accident has taken place in our family. Many such accidents have occurred in the past due to rash and negligent driving and these drivers need to be punished severely," said Nimesh Modi, Hetal's brother.
Samta Nagar police, who had confiscated the dumper, caught the driver who had run away from the accident spot on Sunday night. "The driver's name is Subhash Gautam and he was booked under sections 279, 338, 337 and 304 (A).
He was produced in the court on Monday and has been granted bail," said a police officer on condition of anonymity. Many accidents have been reported on the WEH due to negligence and rash driving and also due to the bad conditions of the road.u00a0
