Mother kills three daughters after birth of another girl

Harassed mentally and physically by her in-laws after she gave birth to a third daughter, a 35-year-old woman in an Uttar Pradesh village killed her three children by throwing them into well before attempting suicide, police said Friday.

"Preliminary investigations reveal the woman was quite depressed after giving birth to a girl around two months ago. Gauribai's in-laws, who are now absconding, used to harass her mentally and physically for giving birth to girls. This probably prompted her to attempt suicide and kill her three daughters," police inspector B.P. Tiwari told reporters here.

Gauribai, a resident of Ragoliakhurd village of Mahoba district, 250 km from here, threw her three daughters aged between five years and two months into a well Thursday and later attempted to end her life.

"While the three girls died on the spot, the villagers somehow managed to rescue the woman, who was later admitted to a hospital," he said.
