After the success of the Maratha community's Kranti Muk Morcha held across various parts of the state to demand strict punishment for the accused in the Kopardi rape case, the members of the Mumbai unit are planning a similar demonstration in the city.
The Maratha Kranti Morcha called for a meeting at Shivaji Mandir in Dadar this morning to discuss the plan.
Organisers claim that over one crore people are expected to participate in the silent protest. The services of over 500 existing WhatsApp groups have been enlisted to reach out to members of community, who live in Mumbai. The morcha is expected to be held in October.
Shanataram Kunjir from Sambhaji Brigade said, "Around 1,000 members from Mumbai and the neighbouring areas that are associated with the Maratha Kranti Morcha met on Friday to plan and prepare a strategy for the biggest morcha that we will be organising next month. We hope to receive record-breaking participation at the event."
Since it is not possible to reach out to every member of the community, the Maratha Kranti Morcha is using social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter and Whatsapp to draw maximum participation.
"We want people from across the state to participate in the morcha, because we want to show the government our unity and strength. There are several issues affecting our community that the government needs to be made aware about," said on of the members of Maratha Kranti Morcha from Mumbai.
One of the reasons why the morcha has received positive response is because it is a silent protest. The members who are participating in the morcha are not allowed to shout slogans or deliver any speeches. "Even the political leaders from the community who take part in the morcha are not allowed to deliver speeches. There is also a team of members, who have been assigned the job of collecting litter generated during the morcha," a member informed.
