Mumbai records 1st dengue death this monsoon

A 14-year-old boy succumbed to dengue on Tuesday in Marine Line's Bombay Hospital.

The BMC is claiming that the teen, who was a Worli resident, is the first dengue death reported in Mumbai since the onset of monsoon.

In the first week of August, six dengue cases were reported.

While there was only one case each of leptospirosis and swine flu, the number of typhoid cases continues to remain high with 14 cases that were reported.

While six hepatitis cases were observed in the city from August 1, a staggering 214 gastroenteritis cases were reported.

While water borne ailments were on a steady rise this year, doctors have repeated raised concerns about the rise in the number of dengue cases since last year.

Dr Mangala Gomare, head of the epidemiology department in BMC, said, "This monsoon, this is the first dengue death reported in the city. However, the number of vector borne diseases like malaria has been under control."
