Navi Mumbai shuts down for Sena chief

While markets remained closed on Sunday, over 10,000 Shiv Sena vehicles were reported to have passed through Vashi toll naka to attend Bal Thackeray's funeral


Navi Mumbai witnessed a virtual bandh-like situation on Sunday as all markets including APMC market remained closed throughout the day. The satellite city bore a deserted look; with all roads, including major highways in the city devoid of traffic. Navi Mumbai police personnel were stationed at all important areas across the city, and no untoward incident was reported on Sunday.

On Saturday, Shiv Sainiks damaged a few NMMT buses after the news of Balasaheb's demise spread. However, on Sunday, not a single bus of NMMT was reportedly damaged.

"As a precaution, we plied only half of our buses on the roads after examining the situation on the routes. No bus was damaged today," said Pandit Tandel, superintendent of NMMT.

According to officials at Vashi toll naka, over 10,000 Shiv Sainik vehicles had entered Mumbai by Sunday morning.u00a0

However, no toll was taken from these vehicles. "We saw vehicles with saffron flags arriving at the toll naka at around 8 pm on Saturday. Over 10,000 Shiv Sainik vehicles passed through till morning, but we did not take toll from any of them," said an official at the toll naka.

A Sena-led autorickshaw union in Navi Mumbai has decided to stay off the roads on Monday while another union will ply their autorickshaws tomorrow. Kasam Mulani of Navi Mumbai Rickshaw Mahasangh said "We kept our autorickshaws off the road on Sunday. However, we have decided to ply our autorickshaws on Monday." u00a0
