year-old Puneet Chand.

After having lost his mobile, Chand, a sales executive, decided to loot an ATM, in order to get some cash to buy a new phone. The Delhi University graduate from Zakir Hussain College is now behind bars.

Chand was previously working with ICICI bank as an executive. He had recently moved to a private firm for better prospects. Since he conducted his business chiefly on his phone, he found himself utterly handicapped after losing it. He had to get a new one. There was only one problem; Chand was a bit short of cash.

So around 1 am on March 21, Chand, a resident of Sitaram Bazar in north Delhi, entered the Asaf Ali road SBI ATM, armed with a screwdriver and an iron strip. According to the police, sensing the absence of a security guard, he then tried to break open the machine.

Ram Bhaj, a constable attached to the Kamla Market Police station who was on patrol saw a person inside the ATM.

"The constable got suspicious and went inside to question the person. Puneet then pretended to be an engineer who had come to fix the machine. He told the constable that he was from a company named Die Gold from Mumbai. However, he could not produce any identity proof. Then we found out that he was trying to break open the ATM and arrested him," said Jaspal Singh, DCP (central) district.

The police have registered a case under sections 379 and 511 of the Indian Penal Code.
