Carter Road's latest entrant whips up 30 varieties of shawarmas, including an assortment of vegetarian ones. The humble Spicy Kitchen beats posh spots with its flavourful food
The pride with which the proprietor proclaims his joint, right there in the name Ahmed Bhai's Spicy Kitchen may leave you with an impression of it being a new place with old school culinary experts and a rustic menu. On the contrary. The tacky tablemats and minimalist du00e9cor in the al fresco section simmer down to zero consequence when the waiter places the most succulent piece of meat wrapped in Pita roll in front of you. The Lebanese Chicken Shawarma (Rs 75) was sumptuous, with every bite blasting with a myriad different flavours. The non-veg Shawarma varieties span Mutton, Chicken in Lebanese, Greek and Tandoori flavours (Rs 75 to Rs 110). Just when vegetarians had readied themselves as outcasts, out of the menu pops up a Paneer and Aloo-stuffed Shawarma list. The Lebanese Veg Falafel Shawarma (Rs 80) was delicious.
The piping hot chicken skewer that stands at the entrance is a sure-fire sign of the joint's meat-heavy Tandoor menu. Spicy Kitchen also whips up Pizzas, Sandwiches, Rolls and Burgers. A good spread of Tandoori seafood, vegetarian and coastal dishes Dabba Gosht, Chicken Kadai, Fish Tikka, Garlic Butter Prawns is available for those who drop in for main course. The Kashmiri speciality Rogan Josh (Rs 160) was tasty, though not authentic. On the beverage menu, a Cream Shake category intrigued us. The Apple Cream Shake (Rs 100) tasted average, and definitely not the best choice to wash down a Shawarma with.
Meal for two: Rs 300 approx.
