Setting the stage for a showdown, the MCD has directed primary schools recognised by it not to increase fee without its permission and asserted that it is "not bound" by the diktats of the Delhi government.

"The MCD does not accept the hike in fee of public schools upto Rs 500 as approved by Delhi government," Standing Committee Chairman Vijender Gupta said.

He said the civic agency is governed by Delhi Municipal Corporation Act and is "not bound to follow the diktats of Delhi Government in such matters."

The BJP-ruled MCD is in favour of giving benefit of Sixth Pay Commission to the teachers but at the same time "it is also our duty to ensure that parents are not fleeced of their hard-earned money," he said.

Gupta said implementation of pay panel recommendations must not become an "excuse" for school managements for further collection of "unaccounted funds, which are generally diverted for other than school purpose." He said that any increase has to be "fully justified and accounted for".u00a0
