Kaiga scientific officer Lokanthan Mahalingam's death case took a curious turn with both guards on duty stating that no one left the campus on the morning he went missing.

Uttara Kannada deputy superintendent of police Babu Olekar, who is investigating the case, said statements of the CISF guards on duty indicated that Mahalingam did not step out of the campus for a walk the day he died.

According to police, the deceased would get up early and get his daughter ready for tuitions. On the day he died, Mahalingam is understood to have left the house at 5.30am. The guards changed at 6am.

"Both guards are quite sure that nobody left the campus. If that is the case, how come Mahalingam's body was found in the Kali," Olekar wondered.

Higher-ups in the CISF, which provides 24-hour security to the nuclear plant, are interrogating both the guards, said Olekar.

Mahalingam was staying in E quarters, which has an independent car park, and the whole campus was spread across 100 acres. Nobody in the campus normally goes out for a walk, Olekar said.

Mahalingam was found dead in the river, which is nearly 2 km away from the quarters, on June 13.
