Bhagini Our Village, the new restaurant in town tries to take you away from the city's hustle-bustle for a meal in a homely ambience but doesn't succeed much

At a first glance, this brand new restaurant on Old Airport Road seems like one of those dhaba-like resorts that catch your attention while driving on the highway. The feeling gets stronger as you step into Bhagini Our Village, which serves multi-cuisine and attempts to give you an away-from-the-maddening crowd feel.

The entrance was bordered by mini lawns and done up with bamboo and fountains. A few tables and chairs strewn in three separate rooms with tiled roofs made us feel that we had walked into somebody's home. With loud Bollywood retro music blaring in the background, we found ourselves a seat in one of these rooms. Though Our Village tries hard to make you feel cozy in a home-like setting, the ambience and the d ufffdcor betrays the effort. We decided to not to care too much about the d ufffdcor and instead move to the food.

We kickstarted our gastronomical journey with Virgin Colada (Rs 115), which turned out to be a frothy and chilled concoction of vanilla ice cream served with pineapples slices. Not too sweet or sour, the drink was a pleasant start to our meal. But the Bhagini Special (Rs 115), a punch of orange and pineapple juices had a fizzy undercurrent and was not so pleasing to the palate. Though the menu offers both Chinese and Indian, we decided to go ahead with the latter. However, despite having an elaborate menu with tawa dishes and Indo-Chinese cuisine, most of them were unavailable on that day. We decided to settle for more starters and a lighter main course.

We then opted for the Conjee Crsipy Chicken (Rs 115), which with a sweet and sour vinegar-like flavour was more juicy than crispy. Next came the very spicy Mutton Pepper Fry (Rs 130), which though good to taste set our tongues on fire. But the tangy pudina chutney soaked Fish Hariyali Tikka (Rs 160) stole the show. After this, followed a long wait for our main course that took ages to arrive. Finally, came the Tawa Murgh Bhurtha (Rs 130), which with a liberal dose of malai was just right with the soft the Butter Naan (Rs 40).

Though the menu had Gulab Jamun and Gajar Ka Halwa listed, none of them were available. So we settled for the Bhagini Special Sundae (130), which was a blend of black currant, butter scotch and vanilla ice creams served with wafers. Overtly sweet, the sundae was heavy and lacked any distinct flavour.

Only a couple of days old, Bhagini Our Village might spruce up given some time, but at this point it is just an average place for a quick bite but not for a lazy, extended luncheon.
