Village accountant tampered with documents to transfer land worth Rs 5 crore meant for poor, to his wife and sister-in-law's names

The Bangalore city police arrested village accountant Krishnegouda of Chinnakurchi, Kengeri, who along with revenue official Hucchappa, tampered with documents in order to transfer government land worth Rs 5 crore to his second wife and her sister's name.

The facts of the matter came to light after a Lokayukta team raided Krishnegouda's house yesterday, where they discovered the tampered documents.

In 2000, the Karnataka government offered government land to the homeless poor. Krishnegouda tampered with documents in order to transfer some of this land to his wife Usha and sister-in-law Tejaswini's name.

Not only are the two women not locals, they are not needy as both hold government jobs. Non-locals and government employees are not eligible for grant of land under the scheme.

Krishnegouda recruited revenue officer of Kengeri, C Hucchappa, to help him affect the transfer. At the primary stage, the names mentioned in list of applicants were those of people long dead.

When the applications reached subsequent stages, the old names were replaced with Usha and Tejaswini's.

This tampering of documents landed 3.5 acre of land worth Rs 2 crore at 2000 prices in Krishnegouda's lap.

The land is estimated to be well over Rs 5 crore in today's prices. Lokeshar, inspector, Upparpeth police station, said, "He is a cheat. He has been in custody for a very long time.
