Hic Hic Hurray!

There will be no additional tax on booze for the second consecutive year. So, party animals can raise a toast to the Sheila Dikshit government. However, for those who are health-conscious and savour an energy drink or lemon laced with glucose will have to pay more as Glucose D will cost 12.5 per cent more while aerated drinks like Coke, Pepsi, juices and other energy drinks will be dearer by 20 per cent.

Rest my case: Delhi Finance Minister Ashok Walia with his Budget 2010-11
at Vidhan Sabha in New Delhi on Monday. PIC/SUBHASH BAROLIA

'Manoranjan ka Paap'
You will have to think twice now before hitting the nearby movie theatre on weekends. Even as the theatres demand extra on weekends, the movie tickets will be taxed at 12.5 per cent and Mr Ashok Walia, the finance minister, have also not spared those who enjoy it in the comfort of their homes. DVDs, CDs and video games will also be taxed at the revised rate of 12.5 per cent. Now, you may like to revive that forgotten habit of reading.

For that pricey look
The luxury will be a higher luxury now. You will have to spend more on branded readymade garments, wrist watches, as all such commodities priced above Rs 5,000 will now attract 12.5 per cent tax. You will also have to spend more on new mobile phones. Even the phone accessories have not been spared. Phones priced above Rs 10,000 will also invite tax at 12.5 per cent.
For women who like to ethnic, there is some bad news. Though not as much as for the guys planning to buy an expensive suit or shirt, ladies suits with embroidery and zari work will now be costlier by at least five per cent.

Fare-well
Though auto and bus fares have not been increased but you will have to fight more with autowallahs now as they would have another excuse to harass you in the five per cent tax on the CNG. This tax has been imposed for the first time. Those who have diesel vehicles will also be disappointed as its cost per liter has gone up by Rs 2.32 in the city.

Coffee never felt so hot
With entertainment rendered costly, the finance minister did not even leave the room for chatting with friends over a hot cup of coffee or tea. Both the drinks will now be taxed at 12.5 per cent. Also, with the Rs 40 subsidy on the LPG cylinder gone, the kitchen estimates are surely going for a tumble.

Light a candle
With the mercury already hitting the 40 degrees mark in the city, just pray that there should be lesser power cuts. Inverters will now be taxed more at 12.5 per cent. The power utilities have already been crying hoarse demanding a steep hike in power tariffs.

Farmville
If the Facebook has revived the farmer in you and then you may have to strangle him again. Mr Walia made sure that all your fantasies of the field should remain in the virtual world only. Micro nutrients and plant growth promoters will now be taxed at five per cent. Keep growing it on Farmville.
