A senior department official said that they had received frequent complaints that oil transported from HPCL and BPCL to Gujarat and other states was pilfered en route and sold in the market.
Based on a tip-off, officials raided the Jai Ambe Dhabha, in the early hours of Tuesday, where the oil was being pilfered from as many as 26 tankers by breaking their seals open.
Officials nabbed the personnel and seized all 26 tankers and the entire consignment.
The team also recovered diaries which detailed the quantity of oil pilfered and to whom it was sold, as well as names of policemen to whom bribes had been paid.
The racket had been going on for a long within the limits of the Kada police station, sources said.
This was perhaps the biggest catch of base oil by the supplies department in the recent past, officials said.
