Officials of the Anti-Corruption Bureau of the CBI's city unit on Tuesday arrested Kevin Pinto, who had allegedly forged documents and claimed ownership of about 69.24 acres of defence land in Lohegaon. The land is valued at over Rs 850 crore.
The CBI had registered an FIR on August 13 last year in this regard. Pinto was in the US since then and a lookout notice was issued for him.
CBI counsel Vivek Saxena said Pinto was taken into custody in the wee hours of Tuesday when he landed in Mumbai. He was arrested in the evening. The CBI has also stated that former Defence Estate Officer (Pune Circle) S R Nayyar and Lohegaon talathi Balbhim Gaikwad are yet to be arrested in the case.
CBI Inspector M S Thite produced Pinto before Special Judge S V Lathkar yesterday. Pinto was remanded in CBI custody till April 25. According to the CBI, Nayyar, Gaikwad and Pinto had entered into a criminal conspiracy with unknown persons to cheat the government by misrepresenting facts about the land at Survey No. 233 A.
