The newly-appointed BBMP Commissioner MK Shankarlinge Gowda could not have dreamt of getting such a rocky start to his stint as the civic body boss.

An uproarious opposition greeted and grilled the new incumbent on several issues, including a CBI probe into the Rs 3,200 crore funds scam, sudden transfer of his predecessor Siddaiah and fire in BMTF, on the first meeting of the BBMP council, leading to adjournment of the session.

The ruling BJP went ahead and approved many BBMP projects, but the opposition wanted the Palike administration to come clean on sudden transfer of former BBMP commissioner Siddaiah, who had initiated the probe in to the funds scam.

According to opposition leaders, the decision to transfer Siddaiah overnight was a combined effort of the state government and the BBMP administration to cover up those involved in the funds scam.

The opposition also smelt a conspiracy in the fire at the office BMTF, which was probing the TVCC report and had named three constituencies of financial misappropriation.

"We have no faith in the Palike administration and the state government. We will settle for nothing less than a CBI probe into the matter," said M Uday Shankar, the Opposition Leader in BBMP council.

However, the ruling party leader, B R Nanjundappa, defended the government's decision to transfer the case to Central Investigative Department (CID), a state investigative agency. "We have complete faith in the CID.

We cannot hand over the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), as it is nothing but the Congress Bureau of Investigation. They may purposefully fix the BJP leaders," said Nanjundappa.

When asked how was his first day on the job, the newly-appointed civic boss did not divulge much, but assured the media that he would streamline the Palike administration.
