Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Friday congratulated Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee for her historic win in the West Bengal elections and Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, who has steered the party to a third consecutive term.
"The prime minister congratulated Mamata Banerjee and Tarun Gogoi," an official told IANS in this Afghanistan capital, where Manmohan Singh has come for a two-day visit that began Thursday.
In West Bengal, the Trinamool Congress, which is an ally of the Congress, is poised for a landslide victory, ending the 34-year uninterrupted rule of the Left Front.
In her victory speech in Kolkata, the Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee also told a cheering crowd that the prime minister called her to congratulate her.
