It takes a lifetime to know a person. Or does it? Do you ever really know your family? Not philosophical rumblings, but questions Rick Minnich's 83-minute documentary film, Forgetting Dad, tries to answer.
Sixteen years after Richard Minnich lost his memory in a seemingly harmless car accident and embarked on a new life with a new girlfriend, his first son Rick decided to investigate the repercussions of the accident. This film he shot, won the Special Jury Award at its world premiere in the Joris Ivens Competition at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) in November 2008.
Part rediscovery and part investigation, Forgetting Dad is a documentary that tries to reconstruct the days leading up to Richard's accident and what happened thereafter, through family members, old Super 8 home movies, and former colleagues. The findings, far from being a sentimental rendition of a difficult relationship with a father who does not recognise him anymore, lead to some shocking discoveries. Was Richard truly a victim of complete amnesia? Or is it a ruse to escape a life he no longer wanted to lead? Find out on television today.
