The parking contractor, Sayyed Afsar Ibrahim, who was awarded the contracts for the lots in January has not bothered to take the mandatory insurance cover he is required to do in order to protect vehicles in his charge from "theft, loss or damage" as per the terms of his contract.
"The licence fee was recently raised from Rs 12.77 lakh to Rs 30 lakh. It is not possible to get an insurance cover for the parking lot, the premium will exceed the licence fee. I can't pay so much," Ibrahim reasoned.
Akshay Karade, an MBA student, who often goes trekking to Lonavla, said, "My bike is often dragged and moved to another place some distance away. Often, due to such rough handling, the bike gets damaged. When I raise this issue, the attendants get very aggressive."u00a0
Said Vivek Velankar, an RTI activist and president of the Sajag Nagari Manch, "The receipts they give you clearly say 'parking at owner's risk'. The railways are not responsible for any damage caused to the vehicles. On the other hand, the contract they have with the railways clearly states that the contractor is solely responsible for the safe custody of vehicles."
While Ashok Malhotra, divisional commercial manager, Pune division, Central Railways, said, "If we find contractors violating the conditions of their contracts, we will take a suitable action against them."
